TELL-US Gastgezin Nuno & Isabel

Over ons – Isabel & Nuno
Nuno
My name is Nuno. I’m 46 years old. I borned in Lisbon, Portugal and I lived until 23 nearby.
That was where I study to be a electrician and had some musical lessons. On my free time I was all the time making sports like swimming, basketball and beach volleyball. Later came the passion for the guitar after starting to try my sister’s guitar that was lost in her bedroom. Music was the trigger to look for something else. After finish the studies I decided to go for luck. I worked almost an year in a shop. The plain was to save the money to follow my dream. The plan wasn’t really great, it was awful. It was funny, scary all but at the same time somehow it seemed great.
I just joined the airport, got a guide book from London with a lot of information about museums, art gallerys, places and much more stuff that at the time I was not interested, bought one way plane ticket and booked a room for a week.
Somehow it worked well with some ups and downs. It was a big challenge because I was alone and did not knew anybody.
I lived there more or less 5 years. My goal was to learn more about music, mainly the guitar, I decide London because of the great rock n’ roll scene from the 70’s but when I got there it was a bit disappointing because it was all about the spice girls.
Anyway I went for a school to study music. I’ve learned a lot with the underground scene. I had to start from scratch because I didn’t knew anyone but it was an amazing journey.
It was a great experience and I’ve met people from all around the world which in that time was impossible to meet in Portugal. I’ve started in London to work in shops, I was working for a very old british tea company that had a lot of shops around London and I was doing part time in all of them.
It was a great experience because it gave me the experience to pay attention for people’s body language and etc… After I started to work as a electrician.
First I start working in small houses, private houses and then to big companies.
Back to Portugal after 5 intensive years, everything seemed the same as before but with cars without lights and strange life things like the old times then. I decided after some work as a electrician to invest on my own electrical company and did it well for some years.
In between I had some breaks and was taking turist to the desert of Morocco. It was great to be a guide.
I love the desert, the intensity it always amazing. Not so great was to deal with people freaking out on the desert. It’s very easy to get lost in your head there if you are not well grounded. Again like in the north of big cities and interacting a lot with other people and I loved it.
I decided after some years living in the city that was time to move on the country side. I always had the dream to live more near to nature and in a more relaxed environment. So I moved and went to do a music project in Algarve. I found a little house in a very small empty village in the mountains. I lived there for more than a year and enjoyed a lot to do music and learned a lot to make music projects. I invite many musicians and we made music events. At that time I became interested in agriculture and decided to move to Alentejo to creat a farming project. It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun and it was very easy to met all the locals and create a very good net of friends. That was the time that I’ve met my lovely wife Isabel and later on we decide to live together in family. The biggest plan in my life and now we are a big family of 7. It’s great to be a father and wonderful to see the development of my children. It’s a full time job, but the greatest one. That experience is giving me a great background for my job.
After more or less two years living in the Alentejo with my beautiful grown up family I then met Jul Molder and Tell Us and since then we kept working together.
It’s now more than 8 years. I’ve worked as a counselor, team leader and family counselor. I did occupational therapist and monitor studies. I loved my work, the team is amazing, great support and very professional. A family. The jobs require a lot of creativity to ways to solve problems. It is very challenging and makes me always to be open, updated and follow the fast changes in our society.
Another great project for a long time. With that come the animals and now we have a little farm. In that process it came the idea to work with kids in our land and we worked to create the conditions to receive them. Again another great experience and kids like a lot to be here.
Isabel
I’m Isabel, I was born in Lisbon, I am 40 years old and have five children aged between 19 and 3 years old. I studied in the “General Arts” courses at the António Arroios Professional school, “Ofícios do Espetáculo” at the EPAOE school (Chapitô). In 2004 I did a professional training as an “Education Assistant” at the IEFP, in 2005 I did training in the construction of puppets by the “Mundo do Espetáculo Cultural Association” and I made my debut as Creator and Monitor of Creative Workshops for children, young people and families.
I have been doing amateur theater since 1999 and in 2006, bringing together all my professional backgrounds, I created the MACAPI project with which I carried out various cultural activities in the area of Puppet Theater, Tale Animation and Creative Workshops.
In 2009 I started to create original pieces in the form of puppets and dolls, participating in various exhibitions and craft fairs.
In 2010 I made the transition from the city to the countryside, collaborating as an animator with Gaia-Alentejo in the project “Convergence Center - Aldeia de sonho” located in Aldeia das Amoreiras, municipality of Odemira.
In 2012 I participated as a volunteer in the project “SVE – Land of children” in Peru. I received training in the methodology of the project on environment education for children and young people: “Mundo de Ania - Land of children”.
In 2013 I created the project “Artesã d’Estórias” to which I have been dedicated since then as an artist and artisan because these are the areas that define me professionally.
I have been part of CACO - Odemira Artisan Association since 2015.
Since 2016 I have occasionally facilitated the learning of portuguese language and culture for foreigners in the region and volunteers in the SVE program - GAIA Alentejo/Odemira in Europe.
I also collaborated in youth care doing artistic expression activities (education through art), through the creation of handicrafts in various techniques, from painting, sewing, modeling, weaving... and facilitating portuguese culture and language. Now I am also working in the youthcare receiving young kids and adults with special needs in our place.
It’s an interesting work for me because allows exploring art and handicrafts as occupational therapy.
Now I am starting my professional activities again full time because I get back to myself on time once all my children are in school, I feel very excited to learn new techniques such as the wool process and felting the wool of my sheep that I cleaned and treated, as well as putting into practice a series of ideas that I put in the drawer during the time dedicated to motherhood.
I also enjoy working with audiovisuals, I have a Youtube channel that I use as a form of expression, when the covid epidemic started it was the way I found to communicate with the world, then I also wanted to share our homeschool year and the videos were part of the evaluation Gustavo’s curriculum and now it’s back as an artist channel.
I enjoy time to read, time to work in my project Artesã d’Estórias, draw and paint watercolors, write children’s stories, weave mandalas, crochet, wool felt, cook tasty food and food preservation recipes.
